Yay or nay? Buccal fat removal is the latest trend in facial contouring

Cheekbones are having a moment in the beauty world. In recent months, buccal fat removal has become the talk of the town for those looking to achieve perfectly chiseled cheekbones without the hassle of makeup tricks. But is the cosmetic procedure worth the investment, or is it just another fad?

Who doesn't want cheekbones that could cut glass and a jawline that could chisel wood? Facial contouring has made its mark on modern-day beauty routines everywhere, and it’s showing no signs of stopping. Today, there seems to be a new kid on the block as A-listers Bella Hadid, Sophie Turner, and Zoë Kravitz reportedly all underwent buccal fat removal in December last year. Even Chrissy Teigen couldn't resist spilling her own experience on social media – adding fuel to the already burning fire of fascination with the trend.

What is buccal fat removal?

Buccal fat removal, a.k.a cheek reduction surgery, is a surgical procedure that involves making small incisions in the mouth and removing the buccal fat pad in the lower part of the cheek. By turning to this method, patients can expect a more defined and sculpted facial contour. However, there are some potential risks to consider before deciding if it's right for you.

The pros and cons

As we age, many of us tend to lose volume and elasticity in our faces, causing a hollow and sagging appearance. Buccal fat removal can provide a permanent solution to this problem. Unlike makeup contouring, which tends to be time-consuming and requires frequent touch-ups, the surgery offers natural-looking and long-lasting results that enhance your pre-existing features. In addition, healing times are typically short with patients able to return to work and regular activities within a few days.

That being said, buccal fat removal is no exception when it comes to the risks surgical procedures pose. For starters, although the procedure is generally deemed safe, patients may experience bruising and infection. In rare cases, facial nerve damage or asymmetry may occur. It is also worth pointing out that people with already thin faces may not see the desired results (and end up resembling somewhat of a hollowed-out Halloween pumpkin). Finally, the aging process plays a major role in how our faces change. After all, what looks fabulous in your twenties may not be so flattering in your forties.

The verdict

Although you may feel like you'll be hitting the beauty jackpot, tread carefully and scrutinize both the benefits and risks involved. Don't just jump on the buccal fat removal bandwagon without considering every angle. Take the time to do your research and locate a skilled plastic surgeon who has ample experience; don't trust your face to just anyone! And ultimately, remember that beauty is subjective – what's important is you feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin.
